1) Hardcover Book The Legal Limit by Knopf. Judge Clarks new book delves into the the great quandry of our criminal justice system. What is "Justice" ?? The story of the Hunt brothers and their respective journeys through the system should make us all think of what happens when the law and what is right collide. Judge Clark uses his legal background to tell a powerful story of right and wrong and how the law is often unable to sort out the difference. The solution found by a small town judge leaves us satisfied but it does pose questions to think about for a long time.¤

2) Hardcover Book The Legal Limit by Knopf. What happens when you lie? Your momma probably told you that it starts a web that you will invariably spin to be larger and stickier than you ever intended. It may even trap you. Martin Clark´s book expands on this premise in a most compelling, at times gut-wrenching way. Set in rural Southside and Richmond, Virginia, this book keeps your attention because its characters ring true and Clark writes them with such wonderful attention to detail that each has his or her own voice, mannerisms and even smell. Clark grabs you with emotional plot twists and these well-drawn characters you will connect with yet once the book is done, you will realize that you just took a very entertaining philosophy class. Justice dispensed by the rule of law, you will see, and justice dispensed by man are two different things. Which do we want in our American justice system?

3) Hardcover Book The Legal Limit by Knopf. Martin Clark´s third novel is another gerat read as were his first two. Being based on actual events makes it even more compelling. The conflict between brothers grabbed me from the beginning and I couldn´t put it down. I grew up in small town Virginia and am familiar with quite a few of the story´s backdrops which made it even more enjoyable for me. I am particularly struck by the way Mr. Clark contructs conversation. It´s real, it´s colorful and quite humorous. Put this one at the top of your "Books to Read" list. I look forward to more of Mr Clark´s storytelling.¤

4) Hardcover Book The Legal Limit by Knopf. There is the letter of the law and then there is justice. This is the theme of this challenging novel. Two brothers are intertwined in a sort of madness. One, Gates, is serving a 44-year sentence for selling a hard substance. The other, Mason, has led a life that has given him a highly respected existence in a small town, serving as a Commonwealth attorney.

In the beginning, however, the two are joined at the hip when Gates shoots and kills a rival for his girlfriend, and Mason covers up for him by supplying an alibi and getting rid of the murder weapon. Gates is convinced Mason can use his legal knowledge and position to get him out jail and goes to extremes to make him do so.

Written with a sure hand and a deep knowledge of the law (the author, after all, is a judge), the story also delves into various relationships, including familial, friends and co-workers, deeply and believably. The moral questions asked are real and heartfelt, reaching significantly not only into what is good or bad but what is or isn´t fair. In seeking to resolve these questions, the reader has to decide if justice has been served. It is no easy decision. Recommended.

6) Hardcover Book The Legal Limit by Knopf.

Martin Clark’s most remarkable novel yet is the gripping, complex story of a murder cover-up that wreaks widespread havoc even as it redefines the concept of justice—a relentlessly entertaining saga that delves deeply into matters at once ambiguous and essential.

While Gates Hunt chose to fight his abusive father head-on, his younger brother, Mason, eventually escaped their bitter, impoverished circumstances by earning a free ride to college and law school. And while Gates became an intransigent, compulsive felon, Mason met and married the love of his life, had a spitfire daughter, and returned to his rural hometown as the commonwealth’s attorney. But Mason’s idyll is abruptly pierced by a wicked tragedy, and soon afterward his life further unravels when Gates, convinced that his brother’s legal influence should spring him from prison, attempts to force his cooperation by means of a secret they’d both sworn to take with them to the grave. And with his closest friend and staunch ally suddenly threatened by secrets of his own, Mason ultimately finds himself facing complete ruin and desperately defending everything and everyone he holds dear.

Intricately plotted and shot through with authenticity, The Legal Limit is a roller coaster of moral relevance. What should govern our actions when family loyalty challenges personal integrity, when the letter of the law defies its spirit, and when fate plays dice with our best endeavors?
