1) Mass Market Paperback Book Pandora's Clock: Hour By Hour, The Terror Is Rising, But One Man Won't Be Denied by St. Martin´s Paperbacks. I saw the movie on TV before I read the book and I thoroughly enjoyed it - it literally kept me on the edge of my seat all the way. So, when I stumbled upon the novel in a bookshop, I just had to buy it.

This book really makes you think: what if? There is a passenger on a plane with a contagious virus; no airport wants to let the plane land there, and some fighter plane is trying to shoot the passenger jet down. What to do?

Usually I find books of the type where you have many characters thrown into a calamity of sorts a bit boring. In many of this kind of book, the author would get carried away with the emotions of all the different characters and cause the pace of the story to become sluggish. This is fine if the book is not a thriller novel, but in a thriller the author must keep the pace up and actually increase it as the story progresses. Well, John J. Nance has masterfully succeeded in making this an excellent thriller by keeping the pace and suspense at very high levels. At the same time, he created engaging characters, but not too many of them, and did not focus too much on all their emotions, but just enough so that I could actually sense the fear and hopelessness amongst them.

This was a great thrill ride that kept me on the edge of my seat, just as in the movie.

2) Mass Market Paperback Book Pandora's Clock: Hour By Hour, The Terror Is Rising, But One Man Won't Be Denied by St. Martin´s Paperbacks. This was my first book by Nance. I really enjoy reading airplane thrillers and Nance writes them expertly. This one has a really great premise, a virus loose on an airplane. This would be a great movie.¤

3) Mass Market Paperback Book Pandora's Clock: Hour By Hour, The Terror Is Rising, But One Man Won't Be Denied by St. Martin´s Paperbacks. This book was really exciting and though I haven´t been previously interested in aviation, I thought this book was pretty good. Nance is obviously familiar enough with aviation terms, procedures, and equipment to write about it with authority, but unlike some other books, you don´t feel like an idiot because you don´t know everything there is to know about flying. He tells the story in a way that non-aviation buffs can comprehend, while also learning a bit about planes. The story is definitely a thriller and it kept we wondering the whole time how the plane and its passangers were going to get out of the predicament they were in and escape all of the challenges that were thrown their way.

Having said that, this book is not Nance´s absolute best. For the best Nance book about aviation, I´d recommend Medusa Child because that one is the definition of a five-star book all the way and you´ll want to finish it as fast as possible, but will then be sad when it´s over and you can´t keep enjoying it. However, any Nance book is sure to thoroughly entertain.¤

4) Mass Market Paperback Book Pandora's Clock: Hour By Hour, The Terror Is Rising, But One Man Won't Be Denied by St. Martin´s Paperbacks. This is about terror in the sky, but the enemy is chemical and not human. In two days time (Pandora´s time), the plane which left Germany for a standard flight to New York to get the 245 passengers home for Christmas, is a circus with no place to land.

One of the passengers suddenly died due to a virus which caused accelerated heart rate, high temeprature, incredible pain, nausea, disorientation, hysteria, panic, paronoid delusions and hallucinations. That´s a bundle of symptoms and fast working, although the American professor had been exposed some hours before. "In the aviation world, ´Z´ for ´Zulu´ time refers to Universal Coordinated Time. At that time of year, Eastern time is five hours earlier thatn Zulu. In London, it is the same with Germany being an hour later.

So much back and forth communication takes place with the plane being diverted and not allowed to land because everyone has been exposed to this virus which become psychoactive and affects the brain -- causing changes in personality. It is believed to be leftover Soviet Union biological warfare contamination. There was ongoing clandestine research in Bavaria with some specimens, possibly from the Middle East.

The varied passengers cause diplomatic, legal, financial, logistic, military and domestic consequences. John J. Nance is an airline pilot and a former military officer so he knows all the government terms to use and not just one or two. He has previously written PHOENIX RISING, FINAL APPROACH, and BLIND TRUST. If you are afraid of flying, this is not the book for you.¤

5) Mass Market Paperback Book Pandora's Clock: Hour By Hour, The Terror Is Rising, But One Man Won't Be Denied by St. Martin´s Paperbacks. I´m not a fan of thrillers, and found this one to be typical of the genre. I have to admit, I was worried that I wouldn´t even be able to finish the book when I ran across this unintentionally hilarious sentence in chapter four, when the diplomat´s assistant sees the tall, broad-shouldered pilot for the second time: "The same vibrations that had shuddered through her back in Frankfort erupted again now with seismic force..." Fortunately, I didn´t notice any other writing along those lines, although the author did seem to be obsessed with beautiful, busty women. It´s funny the way that male authors so often write about some average-looking, over-the-hill guy who ends up with a drop-dead gorgeous sweet young thing. Personally I would have found this book a lot more fun if the pilot had been a middle aged woman and the diplomat´s assistant had been an Orlando Bloom clone!¤
