1) Paperback Book Stand on Zanzibar by Del Rey Books,U.S.. This is an ok book. I had great hopes for it as it has been labeled his master work. I would say that it is a better novel than ´Sheep Look Up´. The halting, soundbite style of writing isn´t so prevelent, nor does he overdue the number of characters and useless plot bifurcations. I find that I don´t empathize with those who inhabit Brunner´s universe. Perhaps they´re poorly developed, I don´t know. In then end you are left to consider the fates of mankind and a planet in peril and you go...."ehhh." The Chad Mulligan character is interesting, but to me becomes less so as the book goes on. The star of this novel is Beninia, and Brunner even suceeds in cheapening its´ allure at the end in a fairly cheesey move. Come to think of it a similar move is pulled on Donald. 1/4 of this book is very good, namely the Donald story, while the rest is average.¤

2) Paperback Book Stand on Zanzibar by Del Rey Books,U.S.. This big, sprawling novel is essentially a sci-fi spy thriller, but the real star of the show is the whacky world of the future in which the whole story takes place. Written in the late `60´s, Brunner employs lots of technical fireworks to bring that future world to life. Many readers will find this annoying and almost incomprehensible at first, but after a hundred pages or so, the main plot emerges and the book finally takes off. Brunner really knows violence, and seems to know a lot about cloning as well, for the period. Hip, funny, and sardonic all at the same time, one wonders how much influence this book had on the emergence of cyberpunk 10 years later. Still, it would´ve been tempting to cut several of the multitudinous subplots in order to move things along a bit faster.¤

3) Paperback Book Stand on Zanzibar by Del Rey Books,U.S.. A kind of experimental writing I found difficult to cope with. I finished the book by skipping irrelevant chapters and sticking to the couple of related stories moving on in parallel. I came out of the book unsatisfied. All those words for what?¤

4) Paperback Book Stand on Zanzibar by Del Rey Books,U.S.. Black dude and trend spotter delve into politics and power.

Two roommates in a crazy world. Well, basically rather just like this, given it was supposed to be set around now. One´s a climber, one´s a spook in waiting with a talent for putting things together. When a small country needs some outside help, they get in way deep as far as the sordid secrets go.

5) Paperback Book Stand on Zanzibar by Del Rey Books,U.S.. I´ve read and re-read this book more times than I can remember now. I´ve never quite tried to quantify exactly what it is about this book that I like. I just know that it´s my favorite and leave it at that. Stand on Zanzibar might be a bit off-putting to a new reader. The book´s pseudo-hipster language and invented pop-culture feel very much like a product of the 1960´s to me. The novel´s format can be confusing at first also. Stick with it, though. You will not regret it.¤

6) Paperback Book Stand on Zanzibar by Del Rey Books,U.S.. A Hugo-award-winning novel of over-population, poitical struggles, and warped ethics. "A quite marvelous projection in which John Brunner landscapes a future that seems the natural foster child of the present...Everything compounds into a fractured tomorrow--from the population explosion to Marshall McLuhan to the Territorial Imperative to the underground press..."--Kirkus Reviews
