1) Hardcover Book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Youth Edition) by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. Anybody who has read about or has had relatives in the war knows about Iwo Jima. Many sadly get their "knowledge" from TV and or movies. However, the movie made from this book is not bad. Even though Hollywood took a little and made other marines experiences and stories part of the subjects of this book.

James Bradley did a great job with this book and succeeded in putting a human face on the men of the famous picture. Mr. Bradley has the "misfortune" of learning their father or grandfather did much more in the war then they let on. As in the authors case, finding his fathers Navy Cross after he died.

Another good aspect of the book is the picture of battle and the rather horrible deaths that many marines faced on Iwo. I would go as far to suggest it is one of the better battle stories I have read so far.

Iwo was a very nasty affair much more then the fabled "Sands of Iwo Jima" that many of us has seen at one time or another. At least Clint Eastwood´s movie does a much better job about presenting what these men went through.

Mr. Bradley also does a good job trying to explain the mindset of the average Japanese soldier of the day. Iwo was the first Japanese soil invaded by the US. It was to be defended no matter what and General Kuribayashi created a brilliant defensive system. He also seemed to understand the American psychy as he decreed that each of his men was to attempt to kill 10 men before he dies. Kill enough American soldiers and the people will loose heart.

However, the Esprit De Cours of the Marines carried them through battle even with the slaughter that went on. Even a nurse once commented that the men she took treated were not beaten no matter how bad their wounds.

One thing that many people (until the movie) did not know was the fact fighting went on after the flag planting. The Marines would loose about 7000 dead with over 14000 wounded. Much higher figures then the blood bath that was Tarawa and the 5 months of Guadalcanal. Even of the flag planters, three would die.

One aspect I did not know about was the lives of the men after the war to where they were basically controlled the photograph for many years. Living with being called Heros when they didn´t want to be called that.

This is a great book for any library!

2) Hardcover Book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Youth Edition) by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. James Bradley never imagined the things his dad-Navy Corpsman John H. "Jack" Bradley had done during the battle for the Sulphur island of Iwo Jima in 1945 during the closing of World War II. He new his dad was in the famous photo of the flag raising atop Mount Suribachi with 5 other Marines but that was all he knew. His dad never talked about it-at least not to James. For Jack Bradley, the memories were too painful. Yet, even when he tried to forget his expirences, reporters were always calling asking to interview the famous flag raiser of Iwo Jima and always calling him a hero-even though John Bradley constantly insisted the real heroes were the ones who died in the battle. After John died, his son James discovered boxes and boxes in the back of his dad´s office closet from World War II. Only then did James begin to piece together and get an acurate picture of his dad´s war through letters, newspaper clippings and pictures. John had gone through a tough expirence on Iwo Jima, an island only 600 miles from Japan. Wether holding dying friends in his arms, dashing across the open to treat his comrades wounds while being shot at, or trying to put his painful expirences behind him, John Bradley had a war of his own. When James discovered a copy of the famous Joe Rosenthal flag raising photo, he wondered what happened to the other 5 who had helped raise the flag. Had they had a war similar to his own father´s? James decides to find out all he can about the battle for Iwo Jima and the flag raising. Who were the 5 other Marines in the picture? What where they like? What were their names? When he finds out that all the flag raisers are gone, he dosen´t stop there. He wants to find out all he can about the battle for the volcanic island in the Pacific that engulfed so many young boys. In Flags of Our Fathers James Bradley pieces together first hand accounts from veterans who were there and interviews the surving family members of the other 5 flag raisers-Franklin Sousley, Ira Hayes, Harlon Block, Mike Strank, and Rene Gagnon. These 5 (six including John Bradley) were from very different backgrounds from different parts of the country. Yet they were all united in 1/400th of a second when the picture was taken. They wouldn´t know it at the time (3 later died in the battle-Sousley, Block and Strank) but they were about to become national celeberities for their role in the flag raising. All 3 of them handled it differently. To find out what happens to the surving flag raisers and to hear first hand accounts of the battle of Iwo Jima and it´s aftermath, Flags of our Fathers is a must read book!¤

3) Hardcover Book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Youth Edition) by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. The book "Flags of our Fathers" by James Bradley is a book about the men at Iow Jima and the flag raisers. This book looks into their lives and the thoughts of what they thought about the pictures of them raising the flag. Everyone thought they were heroes except for them. They were dragged across the country on a scam to make people buy bonds form the government but they were against everything they were doing because all they wanted to do was go back to Iow Jima to fight with their friends. I would have enjoyed the book but the book was mostly about info there was not much of a story line that I could see. Other than that it was a good book to what I could see.¤

5) Hardcover Book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Youth Edition) by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. A great story about a horrific, but successful battle. Written by the son of one of the flag raisers, it gives a realistic view of the horrors endured, and the magnificent bravery of our boys who went forth in droves to give of themselves, that the rest of us might live in freedom.¤

6) Hardcover Book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Youth Edition) by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. Now abridged for young people, Flags of Our Fathers is the unforgettable chronicle of perhaps the most famous moment in American military history: the raising of the U. S. flag at Iwo Jima. Here is the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America.

In February 1945, American Marines plunged into the surf at Iwo Jima–and into history. The son of one of the flag raisers has written a powerful account of six very different men who came together in the heroic battle for the Pacific’s most crucial island.¤

7) Hardcover Book Flags of Our Fathers: Heroes of Iwo Jima (Youth Edition) by Delacorte Books for Young Readers. In the winter of 1945, on the tiny island of Iwo Jima, a ferocious, epic battle was fought, resulting in the loss of more than 48,000 lives and producing what was to become one of the most recognizable symbols of World War II: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the peak of Mount Suribachi. One of the six, Navy corpsman John Bradley, came away from this historical moment with a deep and mysterious silence about his role in the flag raising. Even his wife heard him speak of it only once in their 47-year marriage. After Bradley´s death, his son James began to piece together the facts of his father´s heroism, as well as that of the other five men, all of whom became reluctant heroes because of their presence during that fateful instant when the shutter clicked and created a wartime icon.

Based on James Bradley´s Flags of Our Fathers for adults, this abridged version for younger readers retains the somewhat terse drama, intense heartbreak, and bittersweet triumph of the original narrative. Through his research on the event and the soldiers (three of the men were killed in combat within days of the flag raising), Bradley explores the dubious nature of heroism and the devastating effects of war.
