1) Paperback Book Belle Prater's Boy by Yearling. A Newbery Honor, Belle Prater´s Boy by Ruth White (Yearling, 1996) tells the tale of Gypsy and Woodrow, two cousins trying to understand why they were both left by one of their parents. The bond that is shared between the two cousins intensifies as both try to shield one another from the harsh and sad facts of the disappearance of their parent. Gypsy, a vivacious and beautiful girl, is haunted by nightmares of faceless dead animals every night, and Woodrow, a clever and smart boy, is constantly fending off suspicions and questions from nosy classmates and neighbors on the mysterious disappearance of his mother. Spanning a year in time, the novel demonstrates how not only their friendship blossoms, but how much Gypsy and Woodrow grow up as they learn to come to terms with the loss of their parents.¤

2) Paperback Book Belle Prater's Boy by Yearling. The year is 1953, and Belle Prater has gone missing. However, no clues seem to exist that may help to trace Belle Prater´s whereabouts. This is the mystery which lays the foundation for the Newbury Honor Award-winning Belle Prater´s Boy (Yearling, 1996) by Ruth White. When Woodrow, the son of Belle Prater, goes to live in Coal Station, Virginia with his grandparents after his mother´s disappearance on account of his father´s unhealthy living conditions, he becomes close friends with his cousin Gypsy, who also has experienced the loss of a parent -her father -early on in life. Next to pretty, golden-haired Gypsy, Woodrow appears awkward in appearance: his eyes are crossed and he has little to wear besides hand-me-downs. Nonetheless, what Woodrow lacks in attractiveness, he most definitely makes up for in wit, keeping the reader entertained with the many fictitious stories he tells to other characters. As Gypsy and Woodrow´s friendship grows, so do their spirits as well as certain secrets of their pasts. When the truth is finally revealed, readers will be shocked with the outcome but proud of Gypsy and Woodrow´s moral fortitude throughout the difficult experience that is losing a parent and finding one´s sense of self.¤

3) Paperback Book Belle Prater's Boy by Yearling. Around 5:00 a.m. on a warm Sunday morning in October 1953, Belle Prater left her bed and vanished from the face of the earth. In the Newberry award winning novel "Belle Prater´s Boy" by Ruth White (Douglas and McIntyre, 1996) sixth grade Gypsy is intrigued by the mystery of her Aunt Belle´s disappearance, and is even more interested when Belle´s only son Woodrow moves in next door with their grandparents. Beautiful and blonde haired Gypsy tells great jokes and cross eyed Woodrow is a fabulous storyteller, and the two cousins form an instant bond. But mysteries abound in the story. What happened to Belle Prater? Why does Gypsy have such awful nightmares? Woodrow and Gypsy´s friendship helps them to both overcome tremendous loss and hurt, as both learn that appearances are deceiving and the healing power of forgiveness. Readers will enjoy this poignant story, as White captures the feel of a small Appalachian town in the 1950s, with its sights and dialect with a good dose of humor, too.¤

4) Paperback Book Belle Prater's Boy by Yearling. Why does 12-year-old Gyspy suffer the same recurring nightmare? Why does her 12-year-old cousin, Woodrow, faithfully read the personal ads in the Sunday paper? In this delightful, swift-reading story of two kids in a Virginia coal town White explores the complexity of family dynamics. Presenting intricate social situations she examines the challenges whichpre-teens face in school and in the community at large. Capturing the attention and imagination of both teenage and adult readers alike she presents her story with wit, grace and compassion.

An undercurrent of mystery is never far below the storyline, however, for the whole town was deeply disturbed when Bell Prater--the misnamed younger sister of Gypsy´s mother--up and disappeared one October dawn in 1954, providing gossip and speculation for months. Will the kids ever learn--or figure out--the truth? Belle´s only child was hard hit by this maternal loss; he finally comes to live with his grandparents next door to Gyspy´s comparatively affluent home--which was almsot a shock after having been raised in physical and moral squalor.

The cousins soon bond, but cruel remarks from a bratty boy and a
bitter older woman continue to torment grieving Woodrow. How can he survive such protracted social cruelty and psychological abuse? Belle´s son uses great patience, his sense of humor, his disarming calm
and stock of hilarious tall tales in order to cope. But Gypsy is still haunted by the sudden death of her real father 7 years earlier. Will she ever accept and appreciate her patient stepfather, her long, golden hair or her father´s loss? A truly enjoyable read with thoughtful undertones--sprinkled with references to Fifties TV and pop culture.

5) Paperback Book Belle Prater's Boy by Yearling. Belle Prater´s Boy
I am doing a review on this book because this is a really good book. I think it is the best book I´ve read this year. It´s about a girl named Belle. Everybody was asleep when all this happened, and then her hubby wakes up and finds his wife missing so he get´s up and starts looking around the room and never finds her.
She has a son named Woodrow, (I thought that was a weird name) Woodrow is cross eyed and very, very funny. So is his cousin her name is Gypsy. She tries to get answers out of him which she does very easily, she asked him a question he had the answer. So he´s telling her things she´s wondering that sometimes doesn´t make since, but makes since to him. But what he´s saying is very interesting. His mom had a diary and she would read it to him every night before he would go to bed.
Gypsy and Woodrow have a secret/none secret tree house where Gypsy´s dad had built it for her when she was. Her dad past away when she got a little older. Her mom was in love with that guy like there was no tomorrow. Gypsy was there baby from heaven. Then after he died Gypsy´s mom got a new boyfriend, Gypsy does not like him at all, she don´t see how her mom could have another boyfriend, after her father had died. So, Gypsy hates her mother´s boyfriend.
Later on in the book Gypsy and Woodrow goes out with her moms boyfriend to watch a movie and then she starts panicking, when he takes her home they find out she´s sick. There´s this guy that wonders the streets at night and Woodrow brings him to her. They talk about her father and what he used to call her. There is another book that comes after this one that I read and it´s really good. -Molly-

7) Paperback Book Belle Prater's Boy by Yearling. There´s a mystery at the heart of this lyrical novel for young adults: what really happened to Belle Prater, the aunt of 12-year-old Gypsy Arbutus Leemaster? When Gypsy´s cousin, Belle´s son Woodrow, comes to live in tiny Coal Station, Virginia, he sets off a chain of events that precipitates a solution to this enigma, as well as the mystery of Gypsy´s own father´s death seven years earlier. Ruth White´s characters, particularly the cross-eyed, brilliant Woodrow, are sharply drawn, and the small-town life of rural Virginia is wonderfully described.¤
