1) Mass Market Paperback Book The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Ace. I bought this book while preparing for a business trip. I had been looking at it for a few months and hadn´t had the free time to get into something. Once I opened it at the airport, time disappeared. Don´t be afraid of this book: the title is what I would consider typical Heinlein -- not a lot to do with the story itself.

You have murder, mystery, politics, intrigue... throw in some advanced technology, sprinkle with space and time travel... and you´ve got something rather interesting. I was sorry to see it end.

If you are the kind of reader who needs everything wrapped up at the end of a story, avoid this book. Otherwise, grab a seat and open your mind.¤

2) Mass Market Paperback Book The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Ace. This is one of those books you wish you could stay up all night reading because it is so totally outrageous when it comes to what is happening. What makes this so completely interesting is that most of this book takes place within a week of time, with all that action crammed into one week of a newly married couple who just happens to be slated for being killed, and people keep on trying, from darts through the heart at dinner, to the computer on the rent a space car crashing, to having to lie doggo for a few hours while the couple debates how not to get killed on their honeymoon, it is all there in this book. You will find yourself rereading portions of the book just to make sure you got it, because it is so preposterous.

You will want to read "to sail beyond the sunset" soon after reading this book, to help explain some of the other things that might be harder to understand. This book does not stand on its own, it compliments other story lines and helps tie down Heinlein´s alternative universal theory. Overall this is a five star book, you will find yourself reading the action scenes a couple of times to make sure you got it, if you skim this book, you will be totally lost by the time you hit ½ way through it.

3) Mass Market Paperback Book The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Ace. I read this after reading Heinlein´s Starship Trooper. I had great difficulty in understanding Starship Trooper. Not so much as comprehension, but rather the vernacular used by Heinlein caused me to re-read many paragraphs. The Cat Who Walks Through Walls is no exception to Heinlein´s strange vernacular. Perhaps it´s fine for others, but not for me.

At first, the book was amazing. It sounded like a grand adventure. Then when the characters got to the planet in the other dimension, I became thoroughly confused to the point where I felt so dumb reading it. To be honest, I couldn´t tell you how this book ended. I haven´t a clue what happened. I believe they went back in time, and everyone died, or something. I´m not even sure why they had to go back in time. It sounded like the planet where the main character was left was sort of a pleasure house where young children regularly have relationships with adults. Although I´m not quite sure if that is the case as I had a terrible time understanding what the heck was going on.

I don´t recommend this book unless you like Heinlein´s other books. If you want, try Starship Troopers and see if you can understand Heinlein´s vernacular with that. If you can understand, then move on to this book.

At the end, I felt like I was back in first grade trying to read this book. I mean it made no sense to me whatsoever and I had to re-read paragraphs after paragraphs trying to decipher what he´s trying to say. I apologize to the fans of Heinlein, but I´m afraid I don´t recommend this book. I´m thinking about checking out his other books, but I´m afraid that it´ll end up like this book.¤

4) Mass Market Paperback Book The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Ace. you will probably like this one.

First, if you have never read any of Heinlein´s books do NOT begin with this one! Many characters of Heinlein´s earlier books turn up here, including the infamous Lazurus Long and his ever expanding family. Beginning with this novel will only lead to frustration. Those who have read the earlier books, particularly THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS and METHUSELAH´S CHILDREN will probably enjoy this one and the bigger the Heinlein fan the more the reader will enjoy it.

Richard Ames is out on a date with an intriguing young woman he met just a week ago. Unfortunately just as his date left for the ladies´ room a stranger sat down at the table and began insisting that Ames assassinate someone. Before Ames could extract more details the stranger himself is killed. To Ames´ astonishment the waitstaff dispose of the now dead intruder, the other patrons politely pretend not to notice and his date who has now rejoined him does not seemed very upset when he tells her of the incident. Before the following week is out Ames will look back on the evening as a quiet one. In that week Ames will find himself: married, evicted, a fugitive, ambushed, seduced, a father, in another universe, in another career and meet his father.

Those familiar with Heinlein´s works will recognize many of the characters and themes that appear in this book. The particular style that characterized the later novels those from STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND and after where the book aburptly changes direction midway through, that is heavy in dialog and relies on the reader´s familiarity with earlier books is very evident here. It is a very interesting book, and one that will give those who have been in mourning since the end of THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS a ray of hope.¤

5) Mass Market Paperback Book The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Ace. It is undoubtedly true that earlier Heinlein works need to be read to fully appreciate this story, but, even so, it really doesn´t work. The beginning of the book has a lot of promise: some clever dialogue, an intriguing first 50 or so pages. It´s clear going to be a bit of an absurd tale, and humor and self-awareness at that point seem to indicate that the rest of the book will remain a fast-paced, silly adventure.

The pace remains fast, but the story simply falls apart and never recovers.

Heinlein has a lot of interesting ideas. About men and women, society, history, the future, technology. He often creates characters that are little more than mouth-pieces for him to express these ideas. This is all fine and dandy, as long as they serve the story as well. That´s the case in Stranger in a Strange Land. That´s the case in Starship Troopers. That´s not the case here. After a few hundred pages and countless garbled mishandled plot-lines, it all just turns into a lot of bla bla bla. And the ending? It really seems like the author just decided to wrap things up and tossed off a brief chapter that could serve as a stopping point.

I´m sure there´s a lot here for hard-core Heinlein fans to enjoy. I would consider myself a fan, but not hard-core, and I won´t shy away from reading more of his books. But this is not one to which I´ll ever return. Too bad, because it really seemed like this could have been a good one.¤

6) Mass Market Paperback Book The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Ace. When a stranger attempting to deliver a cryptic message is shot dead at his table, Dr. Richard Ames is thrown headfirst into danger, intrigue, and other dimensions, where a plot to rescue a sentient computer could alter human history.¤
