1) Hardcover Book The Gate House by Grand Central Publishing. I am a big DeMille fan although I found some of his earlier Cold War spy stuff very boring. But his more recent novels capped by Nightfall have generally been highly dramatic reading with a sprinkling of recent history.

This book had no plot. The big secret, Ethel´s letter, was easy to guess and that was probably the only plot twist. The characters were caricatures and not at all developed.

The Gate House should not be listed in Mystery/Thriller Genre. It is quite amusing and would be more accurately categorized as Humor. Nonetheless, one can only take John Sutter´s sarcasm for so long. This book was way too long making it an expensive buy. I suspect Ebay and Amazon will be flooded with used, inexpensive copies very soon.¤

2) Hardcover Book The Gate House by Grand Central Publishing. I enjoyed The Gold Coast so I was anxious to read this novel which was pegged as somewhat of a sequel. Same characters as The Gold Coast and that is where the similarity stops. It´s the whole Sutter saga and one not need read The Gold Coast in order to read this novel. This story picks up with Frank Bellarosa´s son Anthony who may be looking for revenge.

CONS
1-absolutely no character development, characters actually come off very shallow;
2-absolutely no plot, the story meanders from one chapter to another without any development of a plot or storyline;
3-much much too long, whomever edited this novel didn´t do a very good job, could have been about 200 pages shorter ;
4-the main character John Sutter gets obnoxious. His repeated sarcasm is great for the first 300 pages but after that, it gets dull and I just wanted to yell "enough already!", it makes for a very tedious read;
5-the writing is pretty bad and not what I´ve come to enjoy from Nelson DeMille. Much of the dialogue is repetitive and not very enjoyable.
PROS
1-none that I can see.
I was very happy to see that it wasn´t just me. In reviewing some of the posts, looks like I wasn´t the only one disappointed by this latest release.¤

3) Hardcover Book The Gate House by Grand Central Publishing. I have been a DeMille fan for many years. However, the last 3-5 years I don´t know what has happened to him. I have been trying to read his newest book and unfortunately, after only about 60 pages I am putting it down and on the shelf. His constant wisecracks are puerile and really distract from any story he is trying to tell. He is rehashing everything page after page with no real hint of any substance to come. It will be a long time before I pick up one of his books again and this is a shame because he has written some truly good/great books in years past.¤

4) Hardcover Book The Gate House by Grand Central Publishing. When I picked this up at the library I wasn´t sure which DeMille I was
going to get. The thriller writer or the literary writer. Only because
I know he writes more than just thrillers. I was hoping for the former
but got the latter. That being said, it was a change of pace for me
(being the thriller reader) and I was not that enthralled. I do like
DeMille´s writing style (thrillers, but enough about that) but this
book just seemed to lumber on. Yes, there was plenty of depth to the
story and characters, and you got a real good feel about Long Island
and it´s Gold Coast. But it just wasn´t enough for me. I can see how
some people will really love this novel, and others, who are expecting
a DeMille thriller, will look at it as mostly boring.¤

5) Hardcover Book The Gate House by Grand Central Publishing. This book is disappointing, and I´m a big Demille fan. There are three main problems with the book. 1. Nothing happens until the last 15 pages. The rest is either a recap of the Gold Coast (which happens about 10 times) or redundant comments about his feelings for his wife and in-laws. 2. Demille (and by extension his lead character) is not nearly as funny as he thinks he is. Over 600 pages of incredibly unfunny wisecracks is really hard to get through. 3. At some point the constant repetition of this woman throwing herself at John started to make me laugh. I don´t know what world this is, but never has a man had to do so little to get sex from his (ex)wife, and in fact, been hounded for it and pleasured in every way without ever asking. It really was outrageous, but maybe I´m just jealous.¤

6) Hardcover Book The Gate House by Grand Central Publishing. #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.

When John Sutter´s aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn´t the only person from John´s past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan´s ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father´s murderer--Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan´s mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.¤
