1) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. If you are able to install Linux like a pro already then this book it not for you. However, if you want something that guides you and teaches you the basics of Red Hat (in about 24 hours or a few days), then I can recommend this book to you!¤ 2) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. This book is written in a way that is easy to understand, but really does not go into much detail. The directions are sometimes incorrect and/or incomplete, e.g. the installation section does not explain how to create a boot disk nor does it direct you to the back cover where the directions are as well as a few path names being incorrect.¤ 3) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. This is not a good "Starter Kit" for first time installers because it does not go into enough detail. The information about how to actually set up partitions is especially lacking and VERY important. Page 16 clearly states "In most cases the information in this hour should be sufficient to get you through the installation, but it does not go into very great detail. If you run into any problems or if you want more background information, be sure to read the Red Hat installation and reference guides.". I bought this book because: 1. I found the Red Hat documentation lacking for first timers. 2. Sam´s is usually pretty good. 3. I know I need a "starter kit´ to reduce the learning curve. This book would be greatly improved if it just added a few more pages to give step by step instructions on how to partition: By operating system: 1. single boot 2. dual boot one drive 3. dual boot two drives I will probably buy PartitionMagic to set up the partitions I want. I hope the rest of the book is better. I am currently getting errors installing anaconda from the installation disk. Off to Red Hat....¤ 4) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. Having an extensive programming background, I decided to learn Linux because my company is trying to move all their servers over from Windows machines. I got this book with the intention of learning some of the ins and outs of Linux. Well, this book is simply not good. It covers far too many topics without covering anything in depth. It gives some decent reference sources for more information, but it reads more like a Linux for Dummies book. For anyone who is able to do things as simple as set up their email, this book will frustrate you to no end in that it covers so much, it covers nothing. I don´t know what is a good Linux book, but I don´t think it is one that has you learn the system in 24 hours.¤ 5) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. I would strongly suggest not buying this book. The material coverage is very weak. The chapter about partitioning your hard drive for linux was somewhat helpful, but better explanations can be found on various websites. The book only covers topics in a very general way, and you will soon be wishing for more detail. After linux is installed, the man pages will be much more helpful for specific commands. And if you are buying this for the free Red Hat 7.0 cd´s, don´t bother. If your like me, the older kernal will not have the drivers to use newer hardware. I ended up borrowing the latest version from work and I saved myself a lot of trouble. So in closing, if you want to see what Linux is all about (which I highly recommend); do your research about partitioning the drive (PartitionMagic is great!) on the internet. Borrow the latest version of Linux from a friend (or download it for free) because the installation will be much easier, buy a more detailed book (Linux in a nutshell) and enjoy.¤ 6) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours provides new users a tutorial approach to learning how to use Linux -- and it provides readers who are already familiar with Linux insights into the features of the latest version of Red Hat Linux -- the most popular distribution among Linux users in the United States and overseas. The book covers all the most important topics for the reader who wants to get Red Hat Linux up and running and productive as quickly as possible. Written by Judith Samson, the principal of a Linux consulting company, the book assumes no prior knowledge of either Linux or the Red Hat distribution. Everything is explained using simple terms in a careful, step-by-step manner. The book´s CD includes a complete Red Hat Linux starter kit, including the most recent version of the Red Hat distribution.¤ 7) Paperback Book Sams Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself) by Sams. Linux seems to have slipped a bit from the public eye, but it´s still very much on the radar screens of people who care about low-cost, high-quality operating systems for utility servers and power users´ workstations. The release of Red Hat Linux 7 and the Linux 2.4 kernel have moved its ease of use and functionality up a couple of notches. A team of three writers has documented the OS and some of its core applications for Linux novices in Teach Yourself Red Hat Linux in 24 Hours. The book focuses on Red Hat Linux as a platform for individual users. Although that--as opposed to network services provision--is not Linux´s strong suit, stand-alone Linux operations are a great way to get experience in advance of a more ambitious deployment. This book takes the form of a series of exercises that novice users can perform as they explore the Red Hat Linux way of computing. The authors employ a style that´s typical of books that document command-line environments: they intersperse input and output listings with plain-English comments about what each means. Tables list options, procedures guide readers through controlled situations, and tips give details on odds and ends. Perhaps best of all, this book comes with Red Hat Linux 7 on a CD-ROM, which saves you the trouble of downloading it or buying it separately. --David Wall Topics covered: Red Hat Linux 7 and the Linux 2.4 kernel, explained in beginners´ terms, with an eye toward stand-alone operation, instead of networking. The authors give specific guidance through file-system navigation, use of the GNOME environment, and system configuration. Additionally, there´s coverage of simple Internet connectivity via a modem and PPP, as well as simple local area network (LAN) setup.¤ Page Updated: Robert N.
