1) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books. Chrysanthemum loved everything about her name until she went to school. Her friends teased her about her name. They told her she looked like a flower, and lived in a garden with dirty things. Chrysanthemum started to dread school, and decided she no longer liked her name.

Then Chrysanthemum meets Mrs. Twinkle. Everyone admires Mrs. Twinkle. When Mrs. Twinkle hears Chrysanthemum being teased she informs the class that she will be naming her unborn baby Chrysanthemum. After Mrs. Twinkle´s announcement Chrysanthemum believes her name is absolutely perfect once again.¤

2) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books. When I really think about it, this book does not send a good message to children. Chrysanthemum doesn´t feel good about her name, hence herself, until a teacher gives her approval. Children should not be taught that their worth is determined by how others view them. They should be taught that one´s sense of worth comes from the inside.¤

3) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books. A little mouse with a big name. The pictures are adorable, and all kids should sympathize with the girl who happens to have a quality that is a little different.¤

4) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books. I teach kindergarten, and this book was great to use for shared reading. The students loved the big, colorful pictures, and the story about funny names.¤

5) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books. Adorable as ever :) I´m thinking I might use this for my children´s lit paper, hey, why not? Love it just as much as I loved it when I read it years ago. The illustrations are still great (and snarky!), and the writing´s just perfect, capturing the imaginations of both young and old. It´s truly a tale of individuality for the ages.¤

6) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books.

She was a perfect baby, and she had a perfect name. Chrysanthemum. When she was old enough to appreciate it, Chrysanthemum loved her name. And then she started school. "I´m named after my grandmother," said Victoria. "You´re named after a flower." Chrysanthemum wilted. Life at school didn´t improve. In fact, it got worse. Then the students were introduced to their music teacher, Mrs. Twinkle. Mrs. Delphinium Twinkle. And suddenly, Chrysanthemum blossomed....¤

7) Paperback Book Chrysanthemum by Mulberry Books. Until Chrysanthemum started kindergarten, she believed her parents when they said her name was perfect. But on the first day of school, Chrysanthemum begins to suspect that her name is far less than perfect, especially when her class dissolves into giggles upon hearing her name read aloud. That evening, Chrysanthemum´s parents try to piece her self-esteem back together again with comfort food and a night filled "with hugs, kisses, and Parcheesi." But the next day Victoria, a particularly observant and mean-spirited classmate, announces that Chrysanthemum´s name takes up 13 letters. "That´s half the letters in the alphabet!" she adds. Chrysanthemum wilts. Pretty soon the girls are making playground threats to "pluck" Chrysanthemum and "smell her."

Kevin Henkes has great compassion for the victims of childhood teasing and cruelties--using fresh language, endearing pen-and-ink mouse characters, and realistic dialogue to portray real-life vulnerability. He also has great compassion for parents, offering several adult-humor jokes for anxious mommies and daddies. On the surface, the finale is overly tidy and the coincidences unbelievable. But in the end, what sustains Chrysanthemum, as well as this story, is the steadfast love and support of her family. And because of this, the closure is ultimately convincing and utterly comforting. ALA Notable Book, School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, Horn Book Fanfare Honor List. (Ages 4 to 8) --Gail Hudson¤
