Turnabout (Roswell Series) by Simon Spotlight Entertainment

On 2005-03-30 Just some poor guy, Smalltown, USA wrote: Well, here we are. I´ve been looking and looking for a CHEAP version of Turnabout for a year and a half now and I finally just bit down on my wallet and shelled out the 200 dollars for the second part to the two part book finale of one of my all-time favorite shows, Roswell.

But was it worth it? Yes...and no.

First off, Pursuit and Turnabout are GREAT books. Very well written. The characters leapt off the page and I could imagine them all acting as they do in the book. Langley, in particular, was a spitting image of his TV counterpart. So many things were revealed and wrapped up and, with each progressing page, I grew more and more excited and fulfilled.

However...only two major complaints. One of the authors is gay, as most of you may know. And, although this doesn´t bother me, it DOES bother me that he seems to turn these novels into soap boxes for gay rights/tolerance. This I didn´t agree with. Roswell has always been about isolation but it´s a sort of isolation that we all feel. Personally, I feel that Turnabout, at times, used this metaphor in relation to homosexuality ONLY and I don´t think that was fair. There´s a brief mention of the isolation that ´big people´ feel and that was positive, but it seemed that the finger of blame for all this isolation and oppression was pointed at ´conserative Americans´ or, even, ´Fundamental Christians´. AS a Christian, I, myself, felt very isolated by some of the passages in Turnabout, as I felt that the author was saying gays, Buddhists, aetheists, and every other ´interest group´ had a right to exist as they do, but those ´darn Christians´ don´t. In a world where everying is tolerated EXCEPT Christianity, it´s very easy for US to feel as unwanted aliens, persecuted by the fearful populace at large - no matter how ´free thinking´ they think they are.

But I digress.

I said I had one other complaint and this one isn´t as controversial, but deals with one of the main concepts of the show. The conflict on Antar...It is never resolved! I realize that Max doesn´t want to be a king, but we´re talking about five planets spinning in the Antar solar system that are in a state of tyranny - MILLIONS of beings are DYING - and their last hope is a self-centered teenager who simply ´doesn´t want to help´? I found this very cold and, for all of Max and Liz wanting to tour the world and help people, you´d think they would want to help the very race that created the Royal Four hybrids to begin with. So, yes, I was very disappointed to see this MAJOR storyline was never properly resolved. I´d like to think that sometime in the future, we´ll all know what happened to Kivar, but...sadly, by the very fact that the publishers ignorantly discontinued Turnabout and destroyed all the remaining copies, I don´t think this will ever happen. Which is a shame.

All in all, Pursuit and Turnabout were a fast, exciting, heartfelt, and 99% satisfying end to a very underrated and much-loved show and I´m glad that, for good or for ill, I know how the series ended.. And summed up by saying PURSUIT + TURNABOUT = CLOSURE?. Currently Turnabout (Roswell Series) has an overall rating of 8 over 10.
