1) Hardcover Book Loving Memory (Severn House Mysteries) by Severn House Publishers. Plodding and pointless. There are no clues and no deductions. Hammond just tells you what happens and there´s nothing for the passive reader to think about. (If it even is Hammond - the style is definitely female, full of chat about makeup and shoe styles - my daughter suggested perhaps a family member or other ghost writer must have taken up the name.) The story revolves around a hostage that passes up every chance to escape or tell anyone about her plight. Yet has time to write 35 pages (yes, we see them all) of scenery notes on the hills and trees and type of geese on the pond and everyone´s accent, but not the location of the post office they passed. And she mails all of that information to herself. Not the cops. And after mailing, she sneaks back in to her sleeping unarmed captor. Are you buying this? And then the action stops completely as the "detective" finds this tome and takes her sweet time, several sittings, between chats with the nanny and clothes changes, to read this and finally look for the location.
There´s also a pointless story at the start that gets a lot of play and keeps you wondering how it will fit in. But it doesn´t. It was completely forgotten until on the last page, when some observant editor makes him add one line about it. None of the action, dialog, or even the premise is believable.
