1) Paperback Book 20 Biggest Mistakes Principals Make and How to Avoid Them by Corwin Press. The principalship is a demanding, stressful position that requires knowledge, tact, skill, and perhaps above all integrity. Therefore it is no surprise that many new principals fail to succeed in this high stakes position. Marilyn Grady proposes a map to guide new principals through the treacherous territory, helping to avoid common pitfalls along the route. Her easy-to-read text provides over fifty scenarios of failure, along with an analysis of the shortcomings that prevented each principal´s success. The anecdotes cover a wide variety of possible problems, from difficulties with parents and faculty to errors in judgment. Perhaps the most common errors come about through communication breakdowns of one kind or another. Keeping perspective and balance seem to be a prescription for avoidance of some of the most common blunders of new principals.

Although the stories seem to provide a realistic portrayal of possible problems, the advice offered seems trite and canned. While understanding the true issues seems to be the base requirement of problem solving, Grady´s approach seems to be to pick apart the scenarios, offering piecemeal advice for each component mentioned. Each section of advice offers a related quote from literature, but at times the quotes seem to barely relate to the issue at hand; it seems likely that keyword searches yielded many of the quotes and no real attempt was made to connect the quotes with the situations.

This is an easy read, and will indeed give a new principal an overview of the types of problems she might encounter. As a map of the terrain, it is marginally useful; as a guide out of the mire, it leaves the reader wanting.

2) Paperback Book 20 Biggest Mistakes Principals Make and How to Avoid Them by Corwin Press. Though I am not yet even a teacher, I found this book to be a great source of information. Reading through the text allowed me to see the school environent through the eyes of a principal. The emphasis onfthe book was about having an endless line of communication between community leaders, principals, teachers, parent, employees and students. A sense of support between all of these factors lies in the ability to communicate throughoughly and successfully. The book also points out the importance of playing an active role in the school and community alike. In my opinion, the principal of the school acts as the director of a musical. They are the center of many different influences and must communicate with all parts to ensure success of the production. However, without the participation of all of the parts, the show is not a success.
this book really opened my eyes to how much stress is endured by pronicpals as well. Between students, parents and teacher they must find solutions to trying problems. Personal stress also becomes a factor when principals feel as though their entire life is consumed by their work. though being a principal can be a rewarding career, it can also be one of the most challenging-mentally, emotionally and physically.
The book does a great job at taking real life scenarios and cornering where mistakes were made and possibly how to avoid them. Grady wrote the book to provide a less bumpy road to being a successful principal. Though I am not in the school system yet, I am sure that this book has made an impact on how I view the importance of being a principal. As educators, the success of oiur children´s futures lie partially in our hands, and that´s the most important duty of all.¤
