The book mentions Photoshop Elements 1 but is very clear that the basics can be applied to other programs. It turns out the PE version I have is 2.0 that came free with a Wacom tablet purchase years ago. I´ve found the book very helpful when deciding to ´dig in´ and learn to use photo-editing software properly. It starts with the various selection tools and what works best for different purposes. Alot of the tools mentioned are on GIMP, a free software program that´s similar to photoshop.
When you´ve only fooled around with photo editing, such as re-sizing or adding text, learning to use the software properly with a book like this is certainly helpful in the long run, and there´s plenty of cheap used copies available. For fancier stuff, there´s always youtube video tutorials.. And summed up by saying Great book to start with. Currently Photo Retouching & Restoration for Dummies has an overall rating of 6 over 10.
