3) Paperback Book TI-89 Graphing Calculator For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)) by For Dummies. The title doesn´t mention it, but it covers the TI-89 Titanium (which I have), the TI-92 Plus and the Voyage 200, all of which use the same operating system. The 92 and 200 have QWERTY keyboards, and I now wish I had purchased one of them instead.

Written by C.C. Edwards who holds a Ph.D. in mathematics and copywrited in 2005, the book is a bit dated because the OS has evolved since then, which leads to some inaccuracies. For example, the author states "there are no key combinations where you hold one key and press another". Never say never: If you hold the up arrow (beneath COPY) and press the left or right arrow key, it highlights the portion of the entry you want to copy to delete. Very handy. So it´s time for a new edition.

However, I´m glad I bought it because it´s well written, easy to understand, has a good index and glossary, and is much more user friendly then the 89´s manual which I find to be pretty cryptic. Dr. Edward´s book is designed to teach you how to use the calculator. The 89´s manual does that to some extent, but for the most part it´s designed to simply define the calculator´s functions in a seemingly random format.

There are free online tutorials for the 89, but I found them to be little better than the 89´s manual. So, in the end, I highly recommend Dr. Edward´s book, and I also found that I could buy it from Amazon and have it sent to my mailbox cheaper then I could pick it up at the store, most of which had to order it in which would have taken longer.¤

4) Paperback Book TI-89 Graphing Calculator For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)) by For Dummies. I have had the TI-89 for a while and keep finding other classes it´s good for but the TI manuals you download are encyclopedias and not that helpful when you´re in a hurry and just want to figure out how to do one particular thing. This fills the bill. A lot of stuff is repeated in each chapter so if you just need something for a topic in say Ch. 9 you don´t have to read chs 1-8 to figure it out which is just perfect for me.

I am taking Stat and Physics now and found just what I need to be productive in both in no time. It has a brief appendix for simple programming - just enough to do some simple stuff I need to key in some physics formulae and make a simple menu.

If you want to get more deeply into programming or other features you will need a different book - but this will get you through basic physics, and stat.¤

5) Paperback Book TI-89 Graphing Calculator For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science)) by For Dummies. This book is of course much better than the horrible manual that comes w/the 89 (who were they kidding)...however, it could be MUCH better at showing how to imput expressions or equations. I am a math idiot...the TI89 has saved my butt (I just need to take Algebra even though I am a history major) but if you do not know EXACTLY how to enter say a radical then you are left hanging. The examples that are shown are good, but for much less complicated problems...not dealing w/indexes and exponents at the same time. Unless I´ve missed something. I´ve had to call TI tech support to teach me how to input various problems...and they were very helpful....now if they would only rewrite THEIR manual and not assume everyone is a math wizard.¤
