1) Paperback Book Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS by Wrox. This book provides a good overview of MS systems management. As an admin, I want to know how these tools fit together and get some detail on what I could do with MOM and SMS. This book fits the bill. Looking forward to a revision after the release of Ops Manager and Configuration Manager.¤

2) Paperback Book Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS by Wrox. I particularly bought this book for MOM 2005 setup\configuration and found that this book wasn´t I expected to be. First, it doesn´t go deep in explaining configuration of management packs. Second, it is poorly organized. Author is jumping back and forth between configuration topics and that is very annoying. If your goal is to learn MOM 2005 thoroughly then your money is well spent somewhere else. It is better to read Microsoft documentation on MOM 2005 than this book. The book is simply too small to cover all three topics.¤

3) Paperback Book Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS by Wrox. As you sit there watching your server doing its thing, you kind of have to wonder just what´s going on inside the box. Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), Systems Management Server (SMS) and Windows System Update Services are packages that Microsoft has developed to provide you with a view into what´s going on inside the box.

The book does not presume that the reader have any particular skill or knowledge, but this whole subject is not something that you´d assign to the complete newbie. You´ll need some idea of the structure of the operating system, the basic way it works, and certainly the nomenclature of Microsoft´s systems.

This book is intended to be a single source for IT administrators to understand and use these tools in their environment. What I found was that these systems are capable of a lot more things that I understood before reading the book. A couple of them have proved quite useful in solving a couple of problems I had but didn´t know where to look. I´d recommend the book to anyone running a Microsoft server.¤

4) Paperback Book Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003, and WSUS by Wrox. Professional MOM 2005, SMS 2003 and Microsoft Update provides a single source for IT administrators to understand how these systems and operations management technologies can be used in their environments. It also serves as a comparative tool that helps readers understand which tool is right for which job.

It is designed and written for anyone who is involved with implementing, supporting, or managing a set of tools for systems and operations management, including IT operators, IT administrators, IT infrastructure managers and system architects. The readers that have some background in systems and operations management will probably get the most of this book, however no specific level of skill or knowledge is assumed. The writing is aimed at readers who have a basic understanding of IT infrastructure on the Windows platform and have familiarity with Windows XP (and earlier) client deployments and Windows Server technologies.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • basics of operations management
  • how the MOM 2005, SMS 2003 and other update technologies fit together
  • installing and deploying MOM
  • installing and deploying SMS
  • installing and deploying MU and WSUS
  • configuring and administering the MOM environment with MOM and alert tuning
  • MOM and SMS agents
  • Deploying and using MOM management packs
  • Third party management packs
  • Security and patching with MOM and SMS
  • Monitoring and security MOM and SMS deployments
  • MOM and SMS reporting
  • Microsoft System Center Solutions

Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.¤
