Werewolf by Night always intrigued me as a child but seemed a bit too scary and intense so I strayed away from the title. 30 years later I read through Volume 1 of the essentials collection and...chuckling...it´s many things but scary and intense wouldn´t fit the bill.
Werewolf feels like a 70´s TV show ´man on the run´ & ´monster of the week´ style mish-mash. It certainly could swap with the 70´s Incredible Hulk TV show very easily. The lead character Jack Russell is always at the wrong moment at the wrong time and comes across the wrong sort of stereotyped bad-guys (hunchbacks, witch doctors, zombies, ghouls, other werewolves, hunters, etc...).
The writing and narrative are all over the place as the writers come and go far too frequently. And yet...reading these stories always put a smile on my face. It´s cheesy...but always in a fun way. So if you´re looking to just pass a few hours with a time-window into 70´s comic book history, this is probably going to be an amusing aside.. And summed up by saying AWOOOOO! Howling - 70´s Style!. Currently Essential Werewolf By Night Volume 1 TPB (v. 1) has an overall rating of 8 over 10.
