Bill Bytheway claimed The state of being old is normally taken for granted. It is related directly to the elderly and is consequently viewed through perspectives on later life which emphasise the elderly as a group definable largely in terms of needs for health care, for pensions and for social support of various kinds. Similarly, the process of becoming old is widely represented by one key transition, that from paid employment to retirement. Becoming and Being Old examines these assumptions and offers differing sociological perspectives on becoming and being old and on the concept of age itself. Instead of seeing the elderly in terms of needs, the contributors offer alternative analyses in terms of class, gender and race. Examining the life cycle perspective on old age, they show how retirement from the workforce is only one aspect of becoming old, and arguably one which is important for only a minority of the ageing population. The volume will be of interest to all researchers and scholars in the sociology of ageing and social gerontology.
