1) Paperback Book Unladylike Pursuits by Impress Ink. i must say that unladylike pursuits is now my number one favorite book of all time.. a chic book for sure and the best read!! i found myself laughing out loud and felt like i was actually there with the characters, wanting to find out what was going to happen next, yet not wanting the book to end.. this book is so cleverly written you will find yourself thinking about the characters long after the book is over.. i am anxiously awaiting anymore books from alyssa goodnight, and let anyone who asks me if i have read anything worth reading lately, that this is now my number one book and simply worth the time and money to own and to read this book.. you simply will not be disappointed!!¤ 2) Paperback Book Unladylike Pursuits by Impress Ink. If a book has an overwhelming amount of 5-stars, I usually dismiss the one or two negative reviews when buying it, but this time I should have paid more attention to them.
I will not rehash the plot, and will only say about the characters that the heroine acted more like a compulsive thirteen-year-old with total lack of judgment than a woman of twenty-five. This was a poorly connected story; the detailed explanations of what people were thinking and feeling-in case the reader was incapable to make her own conclusions-and the slow and convoluted way this tale developed were all lengthy and repetitious. I decided to skip pages to move things along on my own, only to find out that, no matter where I stopped to read, I seemed to be in the same place I´d left off.
I agree with one of the reviewers that some parts were witty and well-written, and I especially agree that Ms. Goodnight needs, without a doubt, a better editor.
I hope Ms. Goodnight does not do what I did and pay attention only to the 5-star reviews; this is just the beginning of her career and we welcome new writers and fresh ideas. I´ll be looking for new titles under her name, as many will, too. Simplify, don´t underestimate the readers´ intelligence, learn to string events in a cohesive manner, live your characters and give them depth and consistency.
In the meantime, I´m rereading my Lisa Kleypas´ and my Julia Quinn´s.¤ 3) Paperback Book Unladylike Pursuits by Impress Ink. I LOVED this book. It had all of the elements that I look for when I want a great book...romance, mystery, and adventure! Goodnight made the characters come alive through fantastic description and conversation. I particularly liked that this was not just a story about one heroine, but I learned about the friendship of two young women as well as their romances. The mystery was a great element! I was guessing up until the end. If you´re looking for a read that combines mystery, romance, adventure, and great writing, I would recommend this in a heartbeat!!!¤ 4) Paperback Book Unladylike Pursuits by Impress Ink. Very promising new writer. I hope to see more from. Very fun regency, with a sexy hero! A lot of promise. I enjoyed it. Found it worth my time and money.¤ 5) Paperback Book Unladylike Pursuits by Impress Ink. As in, whatever you do, don´t waste your time on this. After reading some of the reviews, rather positive and enthused about this new writer, I did. Waste time and money, that is.
The novel, while it has some of the nice things we all like about Regency romances (daring heroine, hunky heroe, chummy friends, and strict society that just begs to be challenged), certainly falls short. To sum it up:
1.- The heroine, while daring, is incredibly stupid. I could -in a flight of fancy- give some credit to the lack of formal schooling at the time the story is set. But she indulges in such leaps of logic and utter selfishness, that the character falls apart. Story-building aside, this female construct is actually unpleasant! It got to the point when I actually hoped that she would be married of and locked in a room for the remainder of the story.
2.- Then of course, we also have the leaps between the different character´s points of view, which just make the storyline get lost. Harsh, badly introduced flashbacks; changes from one character to the next until you don´t know who in Heaven´s name is talking; slow narration that leads you to skip paragraphs with impunity.
3.- Besides the chaotic delivery, there´s also the unbelievable coincidences. Just what are the odds that two men would be war buddies, then reunite just when one of them chooses to marry the heroine? Who happens to meet the hero when he´s back from said visit? A heroine who has a friend who -by sheer chance- is in love with the man who wants to marry her? Maybe, just maybe, this is fiction, so we believe in it because we accept the fantasy. But it´s hard to empathize with puppets, since I can practically see the strings being moved by the author. The coincidences aren´t metaphysical or mystical, they are mistakes emphasized by the clumsiness of the narration and the awkwardness of the dialogues.
Then again, from time to time, one may find a paragraph or two that is extremely well-written and actually poignant. Just because of that, of how much I appreciate a well-turned phrase, am I willing to give this author another chance, maybe in two or three years, when she´s learned from her mistakes and polished her writing.
In the mean time, feel free borrow the book and maybe agree or disagree with me, but at least, you won´t regret it and will spend your money more wisely. :)
ana¤ 6) Paperback Book Unladylike Pursuits by Impress Ink. She needs to find a husband but in truth would rather not.
Miss Emily Sinclair has just answered the summons that will change her life.- On the eve of spinsterhood, she is offered a month to find a willing gentleman or suffer a marriage to her stepmother´s odious cousin.- Neither choice seems palatable.
He wants to remain a bachelor and is weary of marriage-minded misses.
Lord Brandon Davenport has had more than enough of marriage-the infidelity, the gossip, the inconvenience.- It has all reaffirmed his conviction to never involve himself in such a predicament.
Of course, need and want are very different matters...or are they?
When the two find themselves grudgingly paired in the ambush of highwaymen, temper is matched equally with desire, leading Emily to realize that Brand is the perfect prey for her husband hunt.- But is Brand too cagey to be caught in her trap? ¤Page Updated: Robert N.
