1) Paperback Book The Doctor Factory: Offshore Medical School - The Professor's Tale by Outskirts Press. as someone who has lived this life described in the book, i found it quite amusing. its a nice fictional account of island life at a caribbean medical school. those of us who have been there can probably relate or at least find parallels in our own experiences. its a fast, fun read.¤

I found the book to be enlightening as I did not even know that off-shore medical schools existed. The described politics and goings-on did not differ that much from politics that occur in large Corporations or any large group for that matter. However, it did surprise and disappoint me that the education of future doctors could be compromised as a result of the said "politics". It just proves that one should never allow themselves to feel intimidated by a person´s educational level or status; a higher education does not necessarily elevate one to be above average human shortcomings.¤

4) Paperback Book The Doctor Factory: Offshore Medical School - The Professor's Tale by Outskirts Press. In case you don´t know.... Dr. Hansford was fired from St. George´s University in Grenada a year after I left the island for having an affair with a medical student.

In his own defense, I know of at least 5 other professors from that university that had affairs or went on to marry students.

Wonder if this is a reflection of his firing or not....

At What Cost an M.D.?

"Offshore Medical School".the phrase conjures up visions of scantily-clad students propped up against palm trees, casting glances at Grey´s Anatomy, while keeping one eye firmly on the talent on the beach. It evokes images of predatory professors who are living out the remainder of their days on a tropical island because they are hiding from their past, or simply cannot hack-it in real life, in one of the large, cold countries. We all know, of course, that this is only prejudice and myth. But, is it? Caribbean medical schools are now a huge source of physicians for the USA: the quality of the education which these students receive affects us all. But the quality of the education stems from the nature of the professors and what a cast of characters they are! Idealists rub shoulders with cynics; teachers of ethics with hypocrites and lechers. Sometimes the ethicist is the hypocrite and lecher and things become confused. This book is a fictional account of life at one such medical school, written in the form of a professor´s memoir. It is set against the backdrop of a small Caribbean island: freedom and spice are in the air.¤
