1) Paperback Book The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior by Hazelden. I personally got a lot out of this book. It seems to mirror a lot of what is going on in my life. However, the book as a whole feels very anecdotal. It cites very little, and gives few examples research wise or in testimonial form of real addictions. That being said, at least for me, the book gives good advice. While my educational background gives me an automatic skepticism of the book, when one is in a ditch, who cares?¤

2) Paperback Book The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior by Hazelden.
This book is a good place to start if you are just beginning to look at addiction in yourself or others. Its simple, straightforward, and is written in easy to read language. Some of the examples of addictive behavior feel dated or fictional, but you can easily insert your own relevant situation. They are intentionally written for this purpose, as stand ins. Its also small enough, and short enough, that you can reread the book for ongoing guidance.

3) Paperback Book The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior by Hazelden. In this day and age of quick fixes and appearance over character, addictions are becoming more and more widespread. The author here describes the process of addiction, including addictive relationships. He then breaks down the addictive process into three stages: internal change, lifestyle change, and life breakdown. Following the addictive process, he shares the motivations for recovery. He closes the book by addressing addiction as it relates to families.

This work will apply to any addiction -- it is not restricted to just one variety. I recommend it for all Christian workers, particularly pastors. It will give a greater glimpse into the emotional struggles of the people all around a pastor, as well as a much-needed window into his own heart and mind.¤

4) Paperback Book The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior by Hazelden. Really helpful to understand one´s addictive tendencies, what drives us toward and how to avoid self-destructive acts¤

5) Paperback Book The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior by Hazelden. As someone who struggles with Alcohol addiction I gained valuable insights from this book. As it should, the book addresses addiction in the context of a whole personality/pattern of addiction, not simply addiction to one particular substance such as alcohol. A must read if you struggle with addiction.¤

6) Paperback Book The Addictive Personality: Understanding the Addictive Process and Compulsive Behavior by Hazelden. Second Edition

For nearly a decade, The Addictive Personality has helped people understand the process of addiction. Now, through this second edition, author Craig Nakken brings new depth and dimension to our understanding of how an individual becomes an addict. Going beyond the definition that limits dependency to the realm of alcohol and other drugs, Nakken uncovers the common denominator of all addiction and describes how the process is progressive.

Through research and practical experience, Nakken sheds new light on:

  • Genetic factors tied to addiction
  • Cultural influences on addictive behaviors
  • The progressive nature of the disease
  • Steps to a successful recovery

The author examines how addictions start, how society pushes people toward addiction, and what happens inside those who become addicted. This new edition will help anyone seeking a better understanding of the addictive process and its impact on our lives.

Craig Nakken, M.S.W. a certified chemical dependency practitioner, is a lecturer at the Rutgers School of Alcohol Studies and the Florida School of Addictions. A worker in the field of addictions for more than 25 years, Nakken has a private practice in St. Paul, Minnesota and lectures nationally and internationally on topics related to addiction studies.¤
