1) Hardcover Book The Paolantonio Report: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players, Teams, Coaches, and Moments in NFL History by Triumph Books. This is a fun read and a great debate-starter for any follower of the NFL. A fan of Paolantonio and other NFL reporters who never played the game professionally (Chris Mortensen, John Clayton), a sports radio host myself (Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons) and lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, I discovered another glaring error.

On page #251 (and again on page #252) while labeling Marv Levy as "The Most Overrated Hall of Famer of All Time"; Sal insists that Barry Switzer beat Levy and the Buffalo Bills in SB XXVIII. Not true. Switzer coached in only one Super Bowl (SB XXX, a 27-17 win over Pittsburgh). Jimmy Johnson was still the Cowboys head coach when they defeated the Bills in SB XXVIII.

2) Hardcover Book The Paolantonio Report: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players, Teams, Coaches, and Moments in NFL History by Triumph Books. I picked this book up because I recognized Paolantonio from ESPN and liked his work. I hope that others won´t make the same mistake.

Paolantonio offers up his opinion on a variety of topics, and at times it seems as if he´s throwing out wild ideas just to get attention. He can´t seriously believe some of the stuff he writes here, like saying that Barry Sanders was overrated and much of his success was due to playing indoors. Paolantonio argues that playing in warm weather makes it easier for running backs to rack up yards. Of course, that argument is weakened by the fact that the Hall of Fame is overflowing with backs who played in cold weather climates.... Jim Brown, Walter Payton, OJ Simpson, Jimmy Taylor, Marion Motley, Franco Harris, Thurman Thomas, etc, etc.

The book is overflowing with these kinds of dubious arguments. As a reader, you have to wonder whether he just doesn´t know anything about football, or whether he simply made these arguments off the top of his head without thinking about them. Either way, this is a terribly disappointing book.¤

3) Hardcover Book The Paolantonio Report: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players, Teams, Coaches, and Moments in NFL History by Triumph Books. How can this guy inference that Eli Manning is better than Brett Farve. What a true douche bag.¤

4) Hardcover Book The Paolantonio Report: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players, Teams, Coaches, and Moments in NFL History by Triumph Books. Pleasant argument-starter does just what its subtitle states. Written after and including players and starts through the 2006 season, Paolantonio does a good job placing current players in historical context and and bringing older players into focus with cross-generational comparisons. While he uses statistics plentifully, he excels in highlighting head-to-head comparisons in post season games, where results matter more.

It is interesting to see one of his more recent "overrated" assessments vindicated. Writing before the 2007 season, he placed Jeremy Shockey on the list of overrated tight ends, a rating borne out by the Giants late season rush and Super Bowl win with Shockey in street clothes and absent from the locker room and sideline with a season-ending injury.

I was also glad to see that Paolantonio agreed with me (a rabid Steeler fan) that Larry Smith was an overrated Super Bowl MVP for his two interceptions of Neil O´Donnell in the 1996 game. As he points out, Smith was only in position to make those interceptions because he failed to guard any receiver and because O´Donnell threw two horrible passes right two him!

And while I didn´t like to see Pittsburgh´s own Terry Bradshaw and Lynn Swann in the overrated category, I have to agree with the author´s arguments that they belong there. He might have balanced that out by mentioning John Stallworth in the underrated list (Art Monk is another deserving wide receiver who could have made that list as well), but it was vindicating to see the great Mel Blount on the underrated side. And Chuck Noll, still the only coach to win four Super Bowls (and with his integrity intact, unlike the egregiously unethical and vastly overrated Bill Belichick), who was never voted NFL Coach of the Year, is surely deserving of an underrated mention.

For a good companion on the baseball side see my review of The Stark Truth: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players in Baseball History.¤

5) Hardcover Book The Paolantonio Report: The Most Overrated and Underrated Players, Teams, Coaches, and Moments in NFL History by Triumph Books. I maybe a Packer fan but what he stated in regards to Brett Favre is mere opinion. He takes just a few of the worst stats and uses them. What he doesn´t take into account is that Favre had only 1 losing season, only had good receivers, no great ones. Also, when he compares Favre to Vick...come on Get Real. Vick was playing football for 5 years beforegoin to Prison, who know when he will return. Heck personally I think Vick is overrated as a QB, and should be included with the QBS´s. When doing comparisons you should use someone whole carrer not just a spot section of it....Personally from I read online...I would even waste my money on this book. I take the money and by SI´s book on Favre first...it will be worth more than Sal´s.
