1) Audio Download Book The Fiery Cross by audible.com. I love this series so far, I am basically obsessed with it, and I was concerned about the reviews that said the FC was a boring read.
I couldn´t disagree more.
Do you know when you go to the movies and you see this passionate love and then the movie ends with the wedding? Well, I always wonder what happens next - is the good looking hero still sexy in the morning after 2 years? How do they go about regular life - which is usually not as exciting as the getting to know stage.
That is why I love the Fiery Cross. It describes every day life, actions, how 2 characters (and more) keep their life and love together and strong. It is also a great read about history and what happens in that particular century on a daily basis that hasn´t made the history books for lack of battle and war connections.
All in, I think if you have made it that far in the series, it would be a shame to stop now. DG is getting better and better.¤ 2) Audio Download Book The Fiery Cross by audible.com. What a WONDERFUL book! I LOVED IT! Not to say I didn´t like the other 4, I did, but I throughly enjoyed THE FIERY CROSS. I will grant you it was slow in parts, well quite a few parts, but that didn´t stop me from wanting to "turn the page" to see what happens next.
I love the mystery of her books, the historical aspect, the real people she borrows from the historical records and peppers them throughout her novels; that I end up Googling later to read more about.
What I liked about this book was how it made me laugh and cry. I thought Roger went through a lot in the previous book, but it wasn´t anything like what he went through in this one! I cried for a good 5 minutes distressed over what was happening to him...I did the same with poor Jamie. I also laughed in quite a few passages as well. There were other characters I fell in love with as well...namely the animals of the book...Adso and Rollo.
The antics of the children, especially Jemmy and Germain, had me laughing out loud and picturing their mischievousness in my mind. My favorite scene was when Germain wanted his mommy to shoot the "bad man". Bloodthirsty little mite! Then proudly bragged later on of her firing the shot. Another favorite scene was of the passenger pigeons (now extinct) passing overhead. I could imagine what such as sight might have been like since during the colonial era they were quite numerous, numbering in the thousands if not millions "blanketing the sky" at one time. And while Roger was on a surveying mission his seeing the now extinct Carolina Parrot. If nothing else, DG brought back these two extinct species and let them live once more, even though it was through the pages of a book.
Though some might find her historical details a bit daunting and boring, I find them fascinating and grateful that she went through so much trouble to research the era.
A very entertaining book making me eager to start A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES. I can´t get enough of Gabaldon´s characters!¤ 3) Audio Download Book The Fiery Cross by audible.com. I was a bit disappointed in this book as I was in Voyager. Too much in to the political stuff. I actually started hating Roger in this book. In all the others I could never put them down, but in this one and Voyager, I found myself avoiding reading it. I have reread the series about 9 times and now just skip over Voyager and Fiery Cross.¤ 4) Audio Download Book The Fiery Cross by audible.com. I absolutely adore this series. They´re not like anything else I´ve read and they have every element of good fiction a reader could ask for. The characters are quirky and flawed enough to be realistic, but also have enough redeeming qualities to make them lovable. Every time I open up one of Gabaldon´s books, I´m immediately whirled into a completely different time and place. Excellent, excellent series.
As has been duly noted over and over, this is a loooong book. I don´t see that as a necessarily bad thing, however. I can´t count the number of times a book ended too soon and before I was ready. Fiery Cross delves deep into the plot and Gabaldon is gutsy enough to take the time to fully develop all the facets of the plot. This is what makes it feel so real.
It goes without saying that I LOVE Jamie and Claire. Unlike many other reviewers, I also really like Roger and Bree. I especially like Roger. I was cheering for him as soon as he became a major character and he´s finally come into his own in this book, I think. He and Bree aren´t on the same level as Jamie and Claire, but the books really don´t dig into the characters of R and B the same way they did for J and C. I find myself wishing to get to know the younger couple just a little bit better and to feel as close to them as I do to the older couple. For Gabaldon´s younger readers, who might not be able to relate first-hand to a middle-aged relationship, seeing more of Roger and Bree might be nice.
I think it´s very interesting to note that in both of the relationships, we see from one character´s perspective more than the other. With Jamie and Claire, we see things very much from her perspective and see little from Jamie´s. I LOVE it that way. I really don´t want to get into Jamie´s head. I think the fact that we see him through Claire´s eyes is what makes him so enigmatic. He´s mysterious, and too much unveiling of his inner thoughts, etc. would make him lose some of that absolutely enchanting mystery. As for Roger and Bree, we see things through Roger´s eyes. He´s the more likeable of the two and I love that we get a male perspective. I hope she keeps it this way and continues to hold off on Bree and Jamie.
As my title suggested, true Outlander fans will love this book because it continues the story we love so much. It may not be quite as absorbing and intense as others (I´ll always love Outlander best...nothing can compare), but it has its own charm and I love it because of the greater whole it adds to!¤ 5) Audio Download Book The Fiery Cross by audible.com. Ok, I´m over 150 pages in and I don´t think it´s even the afternoon of the first day - 150 pages of mundane, tediousness. I´m putting it down and not picking it back up!
I remember when there was a huge todo about her books - I´ve got to tell you, I´ve been wondering why.
After reading the reviews here, I wonder if I´ve just started with a lemon, so maybe I will give the first one a go - first I have to recover from the boredom of this one though.
