I bought ours in April, 2010 at an online auction site. It came complete with the Amazon packaging white box. I like this box, it´s thicker/sturdier/smaller than the colored packaging and I find it easy to pack away the set compactly when not in use. I ordered from Amazon the nativity scene a couple of years ago, and was given the option of this type of packaging for a lesser price to save the environment of unnecessary use of the plastic packaging.
Out of the box, it has 3 village houses-a Gingerbread House Bakery, a green Toy Dept., and a red Post Office. It also came with Santa, Mrs. Claus, Elf and a Reindeer, a present with a puppy, sleigh and one rein, and a musical tree.
The pieces are all very well constructed, and the colors of light brown, red, green, yellow and pearlized white are very vibrant and well detailed.
The houses are not so huge, which really appealed to me, you can also add your own little people and LP sets to this set as well.
My son has been having a blast playing with the set, recreating his favorite time of year, he even wanted it on his bed with him when he went to bed, (chuckle)
I´m not sure how long ago this was available or what the original retail price was. I personally paid $10.95 plus $6 shipping. From the looks of it, I got a great deal. The set I purchased was rarely played with, so it was in like new condition.
Overall, it´s an adorable set. I wish I had it sooner. I didn´t put up my own Dept 56 Christmas Village pieces this past Christmas because I knew my son would have been trying to play with it. Now, he has his own ´village pieces´ that he can play with, although if I know him, he will be trying to play with mine too...oh well, I guess I can wait another year or two before attempting to set it up again. For now, we can use this one. This one is a keeper, I plan on hanging onto this. :)
