1) Hardcover Book Lottery by Putnam Adult. Umm, does anyone else care that Cherry is pregnant by a man who has to be at least 48 if he served in Vietnam in 1971 and the story takes place in 2001? Cherry is pregnant by a man more than three decades her senior and this doesn´t even deserve some analysis in the text? I stopped reading once I understood how young she was.

I could accept Cherry being 21. That her relationship with Keith is not even worthy of comment, is an example of the simplistic style of the narrative. Yes, the protagonist is a slow learner, but it´s the author I have a problem with. I have no idea why Patricia Wood would choose to add pedophilia to the mix and not acknowledge it as so.

Other than this, it´s an OK book. Before learning that Cherry was 17, I wasn´t sure I´d finish the book and certainly didn´t feel compelled to do so. There´s way better fiction out there and I´m surprised that readers have given this nearly five stars.¤

2) Hardcover Book Lottery by Putnam Adult. I just finished reading "Lottery" last night--finished with tears in my eyes. Since I read about 100 pages of fiction a day, this is somewhat remarkable. So I simply had to share how much I enjoyed it, how impressed I was the writing, and how much I look forward to reading more novels by Patricia Wood in the future.

While my reading habits lately tend to run more toward escapist novels that provide a "mental vacation, I will pick up "literary fiction" when I start to feel my mind starving for something more substantial than brain candy.

But "Lottery" fills the bill on ALL accounts. It is so beautifully written--dare I say "lyrical"--even while using very simple first-person language of the main character. Compare it to "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime", where that narrator is autistic, and "Lottery" manages to be just as authentic, but much more emotionally satisfying. The story itself sucks you in immediately. You can smell the grandmother´s sofa, hear the boats bobbing against the dock, taste the fake crab sandwiches. And the characters... Well, Perry is going to stay with me for a long, long time.

Though the reader roots for Perry all along, and knows he´ll prevail in the end, the manner in which he does so is both surprising and touching. A GOOD READ THAT ALSO REMINDS ONE OF WHAT´S MOST IMPORTANT IN LIFE.

3) Hardcover Book Lottery by Putnam Adult. This is a wonderful story and a very well written book. I loved it. IT made me feel like I was a part of the story. I felt like I knew the people in the book and it made me laugh and cry. I highly reccomend this book to everyone.¤

4) Hardcover Book Lottery by Putnam Adult. I was in the middle of reading another book, I bought Lottery, read it in three days in between making dinner, going to Stitch & Bitch and getting ready to go camping, just didn´t want to put the book down, sorry it´s over now. I read a lot of books, some I don´t like the endings not so this book, thought it was perfect.

6) Hardcover Book Lottery by Putnam Adult. A funny, poignant, and wise novel about a very rich underdog who shows everyone just how little his IQ says about his smarts.¤
